Los Angeles is notorious for having an incredible local music scene, especially when it comes to rock. It’s not only the musicians, but it is also the iconic venues and pubs such as the Whiskey A Go Go. We’re now living in a time in which rock is starting to have a bit of a revival and becoming more popular in the mainstream and accept it everywhere. One band which is making rock cool again is L.A. based Sons of Silver.
The term supergroup is certainly applicable when it comes to describing them, as they are made-up of incredibly musicians from backgrounds of a variety of great bands. With Pete Argyropoulos [vocals, guitar], Brina Kabler [keys, vocals], Kevin Haaland [lead guitar], Adam Kury [bass], and Dave Krusen [drums].
In 2020 they would go on to release their appropriately titled debut EP, ‘Doomsday Noises’ to wide critical acclaim. And now in 2022 it seems that they have proven that lightning can indeed strike twice, with their latest EP release, ‘Ordinary Sex Appeal. ‘
Back in early February the band would release their lead single, as well as the EP opener, ‘Who’s Gonna Stop Us.’ It kicks off with a great buildup of easy guitars before hitting an explosion of impressive riffs. It’s a wonderful way to open the EP, and a great guitar song. ‘ ReEducation’ takes on a lot of the fallacies in today’s politics which are just completely blatant. From straight up gaslighting, to whataboutism, and other tactics, the song investigates the world of alternative facts.
Right in the middle of the EP the band slows things down with the ballad, ‘With You. ‘Overall, it’s just a great song, is well placed, and seems to deal with the topic that I think a lot of us have been through at some point. Being around someone for so long, and then the realization that you feel like you want to be with him. It is a tale as old as time, and highly relatable.
‘Cause of my Pain’ has and notable baseline that stands out, along with the percussion that seems to aid that funk fueled vibe that I’m getting. I feel like it is actually one of the highlights of the EP, and personally might be my favorite track.
Something that is prominent on ‘Hesitate,’ that is really found throughout the entirety of this EP, is the strong songwriting, and the emotions being conducted through the lyrics. You can almost hear just how fed-up Pete has gotten with his delivery of every single line. It ranges from being mildly annoyed, to being ready to break the nearest object. It is followed with a brief solo that momentarily reels everything in before closing off with even more intensity. This is something you might want to add to your gym playlist.
Sons of Silve have found their own path while giving just a hint of those glory days of alternative rock. It’s something nostalgic, but more importantly, something new. Ordinary Sex Appeal is a phenomenal sophomore EP that packs a political punch and leaves us eager for that LP.
