Review Overview

I’ve noticed something when it comes to my taste in music. Whenever there is a song, album, or any kind of work of art that has the word funky in it, I end up loving it. And this EP is just something else to add to that list. Johnny Moezzi’s latest work “Funky Papu” is a retro-inspired release that combines elements of synth, alternative, soul, and pop to create a unique blend of sound. The 7-song EP showcases Moezzi’s versatility as an artist and ability to seamlessly blend different genres. The EP takes listeners on a journey through a range of emotions and sounds, with upbeat and catchy vibes to soulful tunes. The EP will have listeners tapping their feet and groovin’ along.

“I Built A Woman,” the second track on Johnny Moezzi’s EP “Funky Papu,” is a stellar and infectious song that showcases his ability to blend different genres seamlessly. The song opens with soft keys before transitioning into a groovy bassline, setting the stage for the classic funk sound that permeates the track. The lyrics of the song, which to me anyway, can reflect on building the perfect partner in one’s mind, add a deeper layer of meaning to the catchy and upbeat sound. The song’s hook and groove are just a few of the strong highlights from this track.

“Justice Wheels,” the third track, takes the retro vibes of the EP to a whole new level with its 70s-inspired soulful funk rock sound. The track is reminiscent of an intro to a 70s TV show and is almost like a combination of Thin Lizzy and Gorillaz, blending elements of classic rock and funk to create a unique and dynamic sound. The key riffs and rhythm section create an upbeat foundation, while the soulful vocals bring a deeper emotional layer to the track, with out-of-this-world style sound effects. It’s a fun track, and something I’ve picked up with this EP is that it just must have been a blast for him to let his creativity run wild.

“The Rub,” the next track is ad dynamic song that features strong percussion and a cool break and transition in the middle of the track. The song opens with that strong percussive beat, setting the stage for what’s to come. As the song progresses, it takes a brief pause with a gentle slow break in the middle of the track, providing a moment of contrast and dynamic change.

But then it fires back up with a great guitar solo that showcases amazing musicianship and skill as a guitar player. The guitar solo adds an extra layer of energy and excitement to the song. Overall, “The Rub” is a standout track on the EP.

The closing track ‘Violets & Daisies & Roses’ is a beautifully crafted blend of folk and psychedelic rock styles, with a touch of progressive influence. The song’s soft, melodic soundscape creates a fitting end to the EP, leaving a lasting impression on the listener. Overall, it’s another awesome song and a fitting closer for the EP

To sum it all up, the Funky Papu EP offers a captivating listening experience that highlights Moezzi’s versatility as an artist. The EP is a true representation of Moezzi’s lifelong passion for music, and the diverse array of influences that have shaped his sound. From his Iranian and Italian heritage to his upbringing in California and Washington DC, Moezzi’s music reflects his multicultural background.

The Funky Papu EP is a must-listen for fans of pop, rock, and soul and is a great introduction to Moezzi’s musical talents. It’s a fantastic release that leaves listeners eagerly anticipating more from this talented artist, and as someone with a huge soft spot for 80’s style pop, it put a smile on my face.
