Amon Amarth has been synonym with brutal and uncompromising music for the past 25 years. Recently, the group set out to celebrate this important career milestone with a brand new documentary release titled “The Pursuit of Vikings: 25 Years in the Eye of the Storm”.
This unique release, which will be available starting from the 16th of November, is also going to be accompanied by a matching set of live albums, and massive amounts of previously unseen live material from the band.
Hailing from Sweden, the Scandinavian group took the opportunity for this documentary release to focus on a really special retrospective on their story as a band, as well as the creative and artistic background of each member of the band.
From their early days listening to Kiss, The Beatles or Helloween, down to the discovery of guitars, the name of the band, (which as some fans might know, was inspired by the literary works of JRR Tolkien and his Lord Of The Rings saga) and what it is like to becoming a hard-working touring group. The five members of Amon Amarth are very candid and upfront about their music, and they reveal their most intimate connection to the metal scene.
Before becoming purveyors of great melodic death metal, these guys were first and foremost well-rounded metal fans with no snobbery. They’d listen to anything, from Metallica to Napalm Death, eventually acclimating a wealth of collective influences that will go on to define the sound of Amon Amarth.
“The Pursuit of Vikings: 25 Years in the Eye of the Storm” is not just for die-hard fans of Amon Amarth. If you love rock docs and if you like to know more about how bands come to life and shape their vision, you’re going to want to pick up this film. The documentary is well-edited and enjoyable, featuring interviews with the band members, as well as live music segments and various other highlights.
In addition to that, the documentary often offers an outsider’s perspective, by recollecting fan testimonies and opinions. The band’s anecdotes are also quite interesting, including the way they discovered the growling ability of their vocalist, as well as experiences with previous bands leading up to the formation and consolidation of Amon Amarth’s inception and final incarnation.
One of the most interesting parts of the project is definitely the fact that this release also features a wealth of amazing live recording, from the bands headlining sets at 2017’s Summer Breeze Festival, showcasing the band at its best. The production of the live shows is absolutely amazing, and the sound is clear, detailed and clear, without ever falling into the traps of overproduction.
Ultimately, the winning card of “The Pursuit of Vikings: 25 Years in the Eye of the Storm” is the fact that this is a very honest portrait of Amon Amarth, from their devastating live shows, to stories, anecdotes and earnest opinion related to the band’s beginning, evolution and rewarding career, which brought them further away than any member of the band thought possible with music!
Today, Amon Amarth is one of those legendary modern groups that will always go down in history as true influencers of death metal, due to their ability to combine melodic creativity, with in-your-face aesthetics.
