It seems like there has always been something a little bit festive about Bad Mary. And for the past few releases, a lot of their material has been covers of some pretty great selection of tunes. So, it seems only natural that once the holiday season had rolled around, we would end up with a Christmas release in some form or another. And that’s precisely what we got with the EP A Very Bad Christmas. On December 6th, the EP will be out on all streaming and digital platforms.
The New York based punk rock veterans are giving us some speaker blasting versions of three classic holiday tracks including, Silent Night, Angels We Have Heard On High, and lastly The Little Drummer Boy. The EP opens with a not so silent rendition of Silent Night, kicking off with raw guitars and pounding drums. Amandas vocals here are particularly attention grabbing. While it’s a hard punk rock song, her singing is serene with a mix of some more punkish overlays.
It’s a great duality that gives you both a traditional style, and a more modern rock sound. If you’re familiar with Twisted Sisters Christmas album, think of it as a blend of Dee Snider’s vocals on O Come, All Ye Faithful, with a subtle hint of “Oi to the World’ from The Vandals.
Angels We Have Heard On High is a Christmas track that I can’t ever recall hearing either a punk, rock, or a metal cover of. So this one was a little bit of a treat because it does sort of almost sound like a typical pop punk song naturally if you speed up the tempo. Midway through the song there’s a great little Ramones tribute thrown into the mix which was a nice little gift. Finally, it unwraps with a heavy outro and unexpectedly, a Bruce Channel tribute. We’re getting spoiled with the subtle nods and references.
When seeing The Little Drummer Boy was on the list, I naturally had some high expectations for the percussion on this track, and it certainly did not disappoint. While I was hoping for this amazing drum solo in the middle of the song, it came to a surprise to hear that was done with what I believe is…. a recorder. Some of the best parts about Christmas is, as an adult, those feelings of nostalgia.
Which for me personally, this song achieved on a massive deep cuts level. Because buried in the back of the JC Penney’s catalog was a recorder with a Super Mario brothers 3, and Christmas book play along.
Which was technically my first instrument, and something that was kind of mandatory anyway. The reason that was mandatory was because of 6th grade music class with Mr. Day. Where one of the songs we had to perform, on the recorder, was the little drummer boy. But I digress, and to finish up the song, we do get that epic drum solo that I was hoping for.
A Very Bad Christmas Is an exceptionally good EP. It’s something you will definitely want in your stockings, or rather, your playlist this year. Which we will once again be releasing our holiday playlist next week, and as soon as these songs are released, they are definitely going to be on there. So, we’re wishing you a very bad Christmas, with this very awesome EP.
