Last night was a special evening as Apocalyptica finally brought their Cell- 0 tour to Detroit. I had been looking forward to seeing the band live for a while now, but it’s been a long wait. In January 2019, in an interview I did with Perttu, we spoke about the album of course, and as well as their previous tours in Detroit in which he broke his wrist in Pontiac. Though he said he loved the city and cannot wait to come back, and last night they indeed were back, and they brought a memorable performance to the motor city.
After so many tours getting postponed and canceled, it’s great to see the guys on stage. The show opened with “Ashes of the Modern World,” in which in my interview with Perttu, we discussed the significance of the song and it opening the album, so it was fitting to see that as an opener for their live sets. Later on, Franky Perez would take the mic and join the guys on tracks such as ‘I’m Not Jesus”, “Not Strong Enough” and several others before the guys finished off with their notorious Metallica covers. And for the encores, we had “Farewell and ‘In The Hall Of The Mountain King.’
This show was everything that I hoped it would be and more. I had been looking forward to seeing the guys for nearly three years, but unfortunately, shortly after the launch of Cell-0 the guys only got to do a handful of shows with Sabaton, as the world would go on to shut down due to the pandemic.
Apocalyptica still has about a weeks’ worth of shows left, and this is something you absolutely want to jump on. One of the most mesmerizing live performances I’ve seen this year, if not ever.
