Brooklyn-based collective, Underground System, is set to drop a new EP on April 14, 2023, and the first single “Sleazy” and the video is premiering here today on Folk N Rock. The song is a perfect blend of funk, dance, influences, showcasing the band’s signature style. The lyrics describe a spontaneous night out in the city, where two strangers meet, hit it off, and have an after-hours journey until sunrise. As the group comments:

This song is about having a spontaneous night with strangers. Doesn’t necessarily mean in the romantic sense. Just a night where you’re out on the town feeling alone (not lonely just alone) in a big ass city, but then meeting one or two people, instantly hitting it off, and next thing you know, you’re having a nocturnal adventure until sunrise.

The video for the song, directed by Chris Egan, is a perfect visual representation of the song, showcasing the nocturnal adventure in the bustling city.

The song features a blend of instruments, including a scrappy 808 drum machine, live drums, and percussion by Vito Roccoforte of The Rapture and Poolside. The bass line from JKriv of the bands label Razor-N-Tape, (also the co-producer) is slinky and groovy, perfectly complementing Domenica’s ethereal yet forceful vocals, which have been compared to the legendary Debbie Harry, which I would strongly agree with that!

According to Peter Matson, the band’s guitarist, and co- songwriter along with Domenica, says  “Sleazy” represents a progression in the band’s songwriting, channeling a certain mood and tunefulness that perhaps eluded them before. It’s a testament to the band’s dedication to their craft and their continuous evolution.

The video for “Sleazy” is a perfect visual representation of the song. The video showcases the adventures of two strangers, played by Domenica and Peter, as they meet and adventure through the city. The video which was directed by Chris Egan, who also played drums on the other two songs on the EP.

Egan’s video perfectly captures the essence of the song, with stunning visuals of the city at night, capturing the excitement and spontaneity of the night. The video was shot during golden hour, adding to the magical and dreamy atmosphere of the song.

The video’s highlight is when the pair gets a hold of a very elusive party limo, which once returned Matson and several passed-out friends from a DJ gig at the nightclub LeBain to their homes in BK. The limo ride perfectly captures the carefree spirit of the song and adds to the video’s overall sense of adventure and excitement.

“Sleazy” is a fantastic track and a perfect representation of Underground System’s unique blend of genres. The video also perfectly captures the essence of the song, showcasing the excitement and spontaneity of a night out in the city. It’s a perfect teaser for the upcoming EP, and fans of the band and new listeners alike are sure to enjoy the catchy tune and vibrant visuals.
