Germany’s acclaimed pagan metal act, Varg, is roaring back. The band’s forthcoming release, “Ewige Wacht” (translating to “Eternal Vigil”), is set to hit the shelves on October 13, 2023, through Napalm Records.
Following the success of their previous offering, “Zeichen” (translating to “Signs”), which managed an impressive #16 spot on the German album charts in 2020, the band appears poised to make an even grander statement. With “Zeichen,” the group channeled their pagan essence, and “Ewige Wacht” continues to tread the same profound path.
Among the tracks is the opener, “Immer Treu” (meaning “Always Faithful”). It not only establishes the band’s musical intent for the album but also showcases the heightened involvement of singer Fylgja. Her ethereal, valkyrie-inspired vocals serve as an enchanting counterpoint to frontman Freki’s aggressive growls.
Fylgja shared her thoughts on the single: “‘Immer Treu’ is a song that stands for many things. For fortitude, strength, and loyalty. It promotes understanding over prejudice and champions the freedom to embrace our individualities.”
The album, Varg’s eighth studio endeavor, is rich in Nordic mythological motifs, emphasizing themes of honesty, loyalty, and unity. Tracks like “Schildmaid,” “Fylgja,” and “Eisenseite” epitomize the harmonious blend of both vocalists, a trend they embarked upon in their previous album. Meanwhile, numbers such as “Weltenfeind,” “Tyr,” and “Hammer” emerge as potent anthems, backed by riffs that are both fierce and melodic.
The folk undertones in “Morgenrot” act as a prelude to the majestic “Siegreiches Heer,” reiterating the recurring theme of unity. Wrapping up the album is the eponymous “Ewige Wacht,” a track that encapsulates the very essence of the band – an enchanting mix of pagan motifs, haunting tunes, and Varg’s quintessential power.
Freki expresses his sentiments regarding the new release, stating, “It’s both our most emotional and strongest album. It narrates tales of Nordic mythology, upholding the flame of our ancestors. The album underscores themes like family, resilience, and ambition. A raw production yet mightier than ever.”
For those who’ve been following the German metal scene, Varg’s name isn’t new. With a history spanning 18 years, they’ve not only headlined major European festivals such as Wacken Open Air, Party.San, and Metalfest but have also embarked on North American tours. Despite years in the industry, the quintet, featuring stalwarts Freki (vocals) and Morkai (guitar) along with recent additions Ulvar (guitar, bass) and Rohgarr (drums), and the aforementioned Fylgja, continues to offer fresh sonic experiences. The band’s journey has been a testament to artistic growth and the unbreakable bond they share with their fans, which is palpably evident in “Ewige Wacht.”
Fans can also look forward to witnessing Varg’s revamped lineup live in 2023. Their inaugural performance with the new ensemble will take place at the Wolfszeit festival. Subsequently, they’ll embark on a headlining tour, graced by the presence of labelmates NACHTBLUT and the folk metal ensemble, Sagenbringer. The tour commences on October 7 in Erfurt.
Pre-order for “Ewige Wacht” will be available in an array of formats, ranging from a limited Deluxe Box set, complete with unique collectibles, to digital albums.
