Swedish power metal band Sabaton has released the final EP in their Echoes of The Great War trilogy, titled *Stories From The Western Front*. The EP is now available on all major streaming platforms and features a previously unheard cover of Motörhead’s iconic track, “1916.”
To celebrate the completion of the trilogy, Sabaton has also unveiled a brand-new music video for their rendition of “1916.” Filmed in Birmingham, England, and at the renowned Black Country Living Museum, the video includes appearances from historical characters in the Sabaton lore, a headbanging metal army from Birmingham, and cameos from living Motörhead members Mikkey Dee and Phil Campbell.
*Stories From The Western Front* explores the tragic and harrowing tales of those who fought and perished on the Western Front during World War I. The Western Front was a primary theatre of conflict during the war, with over four million men losing their lives in the trenches and amid ceaseless shelling.
Sabaton bassist Pär Sundström commented on the EP, stating,
“Our new EP tells the tales that came from the Western Front, a brutal and unforgiving theatre of war. The Battle of Verdun, which was the longest battle of the First World War, the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917 in Flanders, the Battle of the Somme… these are all things we should not forget.”
Regarding the band’s cover of Motörhead’s “1916,” vocalist Joakim Brodén shared,
“We believed that ‘1916’ was the perfect fit for this EP, not only because it’s related to the First World War, but because we just love everything about the song. Lemmy was inspired to write this track after watching a documentary about the Battle of the Somme. The lyrics are emotionally charged and perfectly describe the experiences of all the young soldiers, most of whom were essentially just kids.”
In addition to the EP, Sabaton is releasing an exclusive digipak for each installment of the Echoes Of The Great War trilogy in limited quantities. Fans are advised to act quickly to secure a copy for their collection.
