Today we bring you the premiere of “Discoloration,” from Kansas City act Katy Guillen & The Drive. The band (made up of duo Katy Guillen and Stephane Williams) will officially be releasing this second single on Friday, June 24th. You can pre-save the track by checking out this link.
The song takes on the feelings and emotions of seeing the world through a monochrome lens. Be it from “turning white from disbelief,” “blue from holding onto much,” or red with rage. At times, these colors can become so intense and so vibrant that they just leave you in a dull gray mental state.
Katy comments on this by saying:
In the midst of a breakup, the end of my previous band, a transitory living situation and the sudden loss of my sweet pet, everything seemed to be crashing down around me. As the title suggests, “Discoloration” encapsulates the gray mental space I occupied during that season of intense change. The verses reflect on an inner turmoil – that “dark dense fog” that left me overwhelmed and depressed – and working my way through it. Determination and self-assurance shine through in the chorus, with a sonic lift in the bridge, representing a brighter state of mind. Nothing ever stays the same, but it changes highways. In the face of disruption, you have to be ready to change with it.
“Discoloration” has the soulful songwriting of the golden era of folk and country fused with the mesmeric guitar sounds of garage rock. Think of it as if Patty Griffin joined a post-grunge band. With its chorus and beautiful bridge with an uplifting angelic vibe, “Discoloration” is a song that also shows not everything has to be in black and white.
The band released their very first EP, ‘Dream Girl’, just before the pandemic lockdown hit, which was an unfortunate time for them as a new band because they did not get the chance to perform live. After becoming tech-savvy to the world of preproduction and home studio setting, they finally came up with some tracks which they took to Kevin Ratterman (My Morning Jacket, Heartless Bastards, Ray LaMontagne) at Invisible Creature Studio in Los Angeles, which produced 15 tracks.
Just as 2021 was coming to a close, they released the four-track EP, and in August, they will be unleashing their full-length LP, “Another One Gained.” The group is currently touring, which kicked off earlier this month, and you can catch them again on July 31 in Colorado Springs, and thenthey will playing out various shows throughout August before wrapping up on August 27 in Des Moines, Iowa. The album release show will be in the bands stomping grounds of Kansas City, and you can grab tickets for that here. You can check out a list of tour dates below.
