One of my favorite things to do here at site is getting to shine a spotlight on brand-new voices—artists who bring a distinctive quality mixed in with some zest, and sometimes that comes in the form of a debut single that just drops into my inbox at the perfect time. Today, I’m happy to present an introduction to Mollie Elizabeth out of Washington state, who’s releasing her long-awaited single, “Vegas Venetian.” She joined forces with producer Dean Reid to bring this studio version to life, and it’s arriving through indie label Neon Gold Records.
She recently shared her own words by way of introduction:
Hi there, my name is Mollie (aka doeyedfairie), and I am a singer and songwriter from the woods of Washington State’s Cascades. To me, every melody is a tiny world that invites you in—an invitation to be both fierce and delicate, and to celebrate who you are, who you have been, and who you are becoming. My music isn’t just for listening—it’s for wandering, for imagining, and for finding a piece of yourself in a place you’d forgotten. I hope my songs resonate with you!
The first time hearing “Vegas Venetian,” you can’t help but be struck by this sense of dreamy enchantment. There’s a whimsical, almost classical flavor to the arrangement, with just some occasional plucking of strings. I love the way a soft, airy flourish of these strings arrives right on cue, adding even more of this enchantment that intertwines beautifully with her voice. That simplicity really works in her favor, because her voice carries a radiantly alluring quality that stands front and center. Then, once the chorus arrives, the spotlight becomes a high beam as percussion and bass jump in and lift the whole experience into something with life and vitality, while retaining that overall elegant restraint.
Her voice seems touched by the magic of another era—there’s an undeniable old-soul glamour in her delivery like-a presence that is a living, breathing piece of classic cinematic history. I love how she channels that timeless charisma into this track. It’s this balance between refined elegance and vibrant energy that works out so well.
The playful details in the delivery also really elevate this track. For instance, the subtle stutter on “Vvv Vegas Venetian,” followed by a quick laugh, adds a touch of personality. Another creative moment occurs after the line “so what I’m making a sum the cards I have drawn,” with a hwhispered “shh don’t tell them.” It’s theses almost fourth-wall-breaking nod gives the song a distinctive character, and it’s these nuances that I appreciate.
And from listing to the lyrics, I get a picture of someone who’s had enough of certain games. Maybe it’s a relationship they’ve outgrown or a lifestyle they’re ready to move on from. There’s this felling of running free, like embracing the thrill of stepping out on her own terms. References to “You play the game” and “I’m working to fame” to me this kinda sounds like two people going in different directions: one person chasing momentary highs and another person deciding they’re ready for something else, or maybe nothing at all. And hey, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with nothing at all.
I see “Vegas Venetian” as a way of talking about a gamble, like rolling the dice on love, or at least on flings that come and go. She isn’t the one feeling trapped by that gamble, it’s more like she’s the one calling it out and deciding when to leave the table. There’s a bit about traveling light (literally packing bags) and not being tied down by anyone’s expectations. “I’m not a goddess but I’m feeling Grecian” is like she’s saying, “I’m not perfect, but I feel powerful enough in my own skin.”
There’s also a lot about what she wants versus what she doesn’t. There’s this idea of enjoying life, maybe indulging in a brief connection for a weekend or a short fling. And again, the references to the cards she’s drawn feels like an approach to life—she knows there’s risk, but she’s willing to see how far she can push it if it means keeping control over her own heart. Overall, it feels like a song for wanting independence, and maybe just a little of that bright lights, big city magic. But…on her own terms, exactly how she wants it.
