Symphonic metal veterans Epica are back with a bang, dropping their latest single and a music video for “Arcana.” This marks their first new release since their critically acclaimed album Omega and the collaborative EP The Alchemy Project. If you’ve been following our year-end lists, you’ll know Omega secured a spot on our Album of the Year ranking here at Folk N Metal.
The band shared some insight into the creation of “Arcana,” explaining its deeper significance:
“‘Arcana’ guides you through the universal stages of spiritual evolution in life. It leads the way to a higher consciousness and spiritual self-awareness,” Epica stated. “Writing this song was a spontaneous effort, so it came together quickly, which felt so natural that it wrote itself. The music contains classic Epica elements but has some vibes that might remind you of ’80s alternative rock or modern metal.”
It’s a statement that suggests the band is leaning into their signature symphonic sound while experimenting with new textures and influences. “Arcana” is also a part of a broader experience. Included in the release is “The Ghost in Me,” a collaboration with the Netherlands’ beloved theme park, De Efteling. This partnership adds a layer of theatricality to the track, making it a cool experince.
Epica has already started to perform “Arcana” live, debuting it during their recent Symphonic Synergy show in Amsterdam. Epica has also just announced that they’re bringing their grand symphonic spectacle to Latin America, with two special shows featuring a full orchestra and choir. Tickets are still up for grabs, and if the Amsterdam performance is anything to go by, it’s set to be an unforgettable night.
With “Arcana,” Epica is giving us a glimpse of what’s on the horizon. This track might just be the opening chapter of what they have in store for 2025. As always, you can stream the new single on all major platforms now.
