Here we are again, looking back at another incredible year of music as 2024 draws to a close. This year has been throwing an almost overwhelming number of amazing releases our way across every genre and subgenre you can think of. When we started putting this list together, we quickly realized that 2024 wasn’t just giving us quantity, as the quality of albums this year has been off the charts, making our job of picking favorites harder than ever before.
We’ve made some pretty big changes to our year-end coverage this time around. We’ve brought the Folk N Metal and our metal categories right into our main awards list, and we’ve actually expanded our metal coverage to include even more subgenres. By bringing everything together, we’ve managed to clean up some overlap while actually covering more ground than before.
Each category now stands stronger on its own, which means the competition for some of spots are even more difficult to win . This especially rings true for our Album of the Year award, which now draws from a larger pool of the best music across all styles. Getting to this final list took countless hours of listening and debating about what deserves to make the cut. Every pick here represents more than just technical skill – we’re looking at innovation as well as artistic vision, and how these releases push their genres in an all new direction.
Album Of The Year
The Best Album Of 2024 – Enn – Eivør

Form the 2024 selection out of thousands of submissions that we’ve received this year, the top choice is “Enn” by Eivør. This album stands out for the way it circles back to the longstanding folk traditions of the Faroe Islands while branching into other regions of sound. Its approach never feels confined to a single genre, embracing a range that includes elements of dark folk, some really awesome electronic undercurrents, and orchestral components.
“Enn” can be regarded as one of the more innovative endeavors presented by Eivør, amplifying creative instincts that have been honed over time. Drawing strength from the roots that originally shaped her work, the recording still presses into new territory. It’s a mix of the old and the new, forged in the fires of experimentation. The songs here carry the aura of centuries-old traditions while embracing an experimental spirit. Eivør’s vocal performance is unforgettable, moving between moments of quiet intensity and all out power.
At the very heart of this record, Enn is a reflection on the balance between humanity’s desires and the natural world that shapes and sustains us. Through grand, almost celestial compositions and shadowy, pulse-driven undercurrents, the album captures the relentless pull of emotion and survival. It contemplates the fragile beauty of a planet that serves as both a sanctuary and a battleground, giving us all some much needed solace amid the chaos.
This album truly feels like a culmination of her journey so far while hinting at an endless horizon of what’s yet to come. Every element here is infused with her distinct artistry, making it an album that will leave its mark not only on her career but on anyone who experiences it.

Best Concept Album Of 2024 – Phantoma – Unleash The Archers

AI is everywhere these days—embedded in gadgets and even at this point, it’s going to be in your toaster. Unleash The Archers have always been storytellers at heart, and with Phantoma, they’ve taken an awesome step into the world of artificial intelligence. What makes this album stand out isn’t just the story itself but the band’s thoughtful integration of AI into the creative process. They’ve used it in ways that feel purposeful and ethical, adding a very cool and almost 4D chess type of twist to their music without losing their edge. The riffs are awesome, the solos we’ve come to love so much as there, and Brittany’s vocals are as soaring as ever. Their signature power metal sound remains unstoppable, and this time they give us more variety. Phantoma is a testament to the band’s ability to push boundaries while staying true to their roots.

Blending elements of power metal, folk metal, symphonic metal, and melodic death metal, Ryujin has created something entirely their own—an awesome fusion of sounds that feels groundbreaking to us, even when we always thought we heard it all.
Lending his expertise to this release is Matt Heafy, who contributed on the production front and added his vocals to a handful of tracks. His involvement adds even more energy to an album already brimming with creativity. What makes Ryujin’s debut great isn’t just the blending of styles but how effortlessly they tie it all together. Each track feels cohesive while still embracing a range of influences, making this one of the year’s most ambitious and rewarding albums.
Best Debut Album Of 2024 – Like No Other – Kobra Paige
For the best debut album this year, the choice centers on a figure well-known within these circles, someone whose name hits beyond just one corner of the industry. There is nothing unfamiliar about stepping onto the stage for this individual, who has encountered not only the highs many admire but also the lows that are rarely discussed. The presence of this artist, forged through years with Kobra and the Lotus, has rooted her firmly in the Hard Rock and metal communities, establishing a reputation that withstands the toughest conditions. Kobra Paige stands as an example to resilience, reflecting a spirit that has managed to endure and even strengthen through all the ups and downs that this industry can give you.
And just like a phoenix rising from the ashes of so much adversity, she has a spirit forged in fire and struggles. She lays it all out on her debut release, “Like No Other”. Within its tracks, there are elements never previously associated with her work, opening some new paths to explore. It’s awesome how fluidly she can shift between genres, as if bridging two distinct worlds without losing any sense of authenticity.
It’s a place where more than a few new facets shine, each one coming from a part of her we haven’t really seen before. The way she slips between styles feels so effortless—like she’s crossing a into a new world rather than venturing into territory that doesn’t fit. There’s a real sense of freedom running through these tracks, pushing beyond what anyone might’ve expected. Not only is this album a banger and all out enjoyable, it genuinely inspires a new level of respect.
At the end of the day, this stands right at the top of the heap. The year hasn’t lacked strong contenders, but this record claims its own spot with no room for argument. It’s one of those rare releases that confidently earns a place among the best.
Best Live Album Of 2024 – The Tales of Nosferatu – Two Decades of Blood (2004 – 2024) Bloodbound

Some years ago, the best live album category had been put to rest. It sat on the shelf for a while, but this year changed everything. The sheer amount of live releases that came out recently was enough to light a fire under that idea again. The level of quality was so high that it felt impossible not to bring the category back. Among the standout names making this return feel absolutely necessary were the power metal icons Bloodbound. Their live offering, “Tales of Nosferatu Two Decades of Blood” (2004 – 2024), pulled straight from a summer 2023 performance at Masters of Rock in the Czech Republic, stands as a perfect example of why that decision made so much sense.
This release was also available in a solid Blu-ray edition, complete with a bunch of extra material that kept things interesting. Everything about it came across as top notch, capturing the kind of energy that listeners crave from a genuine live show. There’s crowd interaction that can be heard clearly throughout, and it goes beyond just background noise. That connection between stage and audience really adds to the feeling of being right there in the moment. Patrik’s way of playing to the crowd helped create a setting that felt vivid and engaging, us right into that environment.

Once again, another phenomenal addition enriches their discography this year, standing among the strongest folk metal releases of the current cycle.
The songwriting and overarching story embedded in these tracks match the high expectations typically associated with these Finnish folk metal veterans. There is an undeniable surge of energy running through the material, with melodies that stand out. In many parts, the music proves instantly memorable. With all the elements delivered here, it easily claims its spot as one of the best releases of the year, meeting expectations and pushing them just a bit further.
Best Melodic Metal Album Of 2024 – Expedition One – Metalite

When it comes to metal, few scenes can match the output that emerges from Sweden. Among the names that have risen up, one stood tall this year for delivering an energetic, adrenaline-fueled album: Metalite. The group’s latest record, “Expedition One,” brings together melodic, modern, and power metal elements in a way that genuinely holds you from start to finish. There is an abundance of variety mixed throughout, creating music that feels balanced and powerful.
Part of what makes this album so appealing lies in the signature sound that Metalite has developed over time. It is present in the melodies, noticeable in the transitions, and evident in the way the band fuses different aspects of heavy music. The energetic pulse of these songs is not simply surface-level—beneath the polished exterior, a certain heaviness is right there and in your face. That weight lends the music to a place that goes beyond standard formulas, making it feel less predictable and more engaging.
What also sets “Expedition One” apart is the way these various influences are integrated. Instead of feeling like separate pieces forced together, each element seems to find its place naturally, resulting in a balanced, well-rounded experience. There is no sense of a track moving aimlessly or losing steam halfway through. Instead, the progression feels cohesive, never sacrificing intensity or melody. Taken as a whole, it is an effort that stands confidently as one of the year’s most impressive additions to a growing discography, showing us that Metalite continues to offer something amazing with each release they put out.
Best Symphonic Metal Album Of 2024 – Pirates II: Armada – Visions Of Atlantis

“Pirates II: Armada” made a huge impact this year, hitting with such intensity that it managed to earn a rare 10 out of 10 score from us. Visions of Atlantis is showing exactly what symphonic metal can achieve, and doing it with a style and individuality that make it stand apart. The music delivers that classic feeling reminiscent of the late ’90s and early 2000s—epic, cinematic, even mixing in some folk elements—all coming together in a way that feels natural and just awesome.
The presence of some amazing vocals brings a beautiful sound that never gets overshadowed, while the riffs maintain a strength that feeds into the album’s energy. The songwriting feels so well connected to nautical themes, and personal experiences. This collection easily stands as one of the most consistently enjoyable and downright impressive releases heard all year.
Best Melodic Death Metal Album Of 2024 – Time II – Wintersun

They say patience pays off, and this time it took more than a decade—twelve long years, to be exact. “Time: II” from Wintersun was first announced ages ago, becoming a source of endless questions, rumors, memes, and speculation. Now that it has finally arrived, it truly delivers everything that had been hoped for and then some. It’s a great release, and though calling it “an experience” might sound worn out, it really feels like something beyond the ordinary. There are extraordinarily lengthy tracks here, each one absolutely packed to the brim with material, leaving no sense of anything held back or cut short.
The prolonged wait seems to have allowed every idea to find its place, showing that all the build-up was worth it. What’s presented on this album reflects a vision that took its time to fully form. Those who’ve been anticipating this moment for years are finally seeing their patience rewarded, as “Time: II” fulfills expectations that only grew stronger with every passing rumor and half-update. Best Alternative Metal Album Of 2024 – PowerNerd – Devin Townsend

Devin Townsend’s latest effort in the progressive and alternative metal world arrived this year under the name “Powernerd,” and it’s hard not to be impressed by how quickly it was put together—reportedly in just a little over a week. Then again, this is Devin Townsend, known for turning even rapid-fire projects into something that stands apart quick, fast, and in a hurry. Those who recall his previous release—selected as that year’s top metal album from us—know there’s a certain expectation every time a new record emerges under his name. This one meets those expectations, maintaining a quality that doesn’t waver, even when the process behind it seems unusually swift.
What’s presented here doesn’t feel like something rushed or slapped together. The material sounds like it’s coming from an artist who exists in a space of his own making, unbothered by the usual constraints. When approaching a Devin Townsend album, the bar always sits high, and once again, that standard is met without fail. It’s a release that justifies its presence, offering another worthy chapter in a career that continues to deliver, each record carving out its own place while still holding onto the qualities that made his previous works so awesome.
Best Modern Metal Album Of 2024 – The Catalyst – Amaranthe

We’ve rarely seen any band dominate a genre the way Amaranthe does with their distinct mix of modern metal. They are known for delivering exactly what fans want every time, and it’s almost as if nobody else can hold a candle to what they do. Once again, here they are on our 2024 list under the modern metal category, and it’s starting to feel a bit unfair—though it’s hard to argue against greatness when it’s this consistent. With the release of “The Catalyst,” they’ve dished out everything I hoped for, checking every box we had going in.
Even though “The Catalyst” hit shelves at the beginning of the year, it never slipped from our rotation. Month after month, track after track, it managed to stay fresh and keep many of us hooked without losing any of that spark. The energy is high, the performances are fantastic, and the overall sound continues to show why Amaranthe are the best at what they do. They’re proving once again that they know how to keep anyone who hears their music fully invested and ready for more.

Gaerea brought pure gold to the black metal in 2024 with their release “Coma.” We couldn’t get enough of it, finding ourselves hitting play on this album countless times throughout the year. It made for great background music while working, thanks to the way it creates such a strong sense of place without feeling forced. There’s something about this record that feels different from what we normally run across, as if they’ve stepped beyond the usual boundaries of their style. We’ve come to know Gaerea for consistently delivering outstanding work, and this album does nothing to change that perception. The sound is brutally heavy when it needs to be, yet still somehow easy for newcomers to get into if they’re just dipping their toes into black metal.
This record managed to stay fresh no matter how many times it spun, offering a steady reminder of why this band has a well-earned reputation. After all these listens, it’s clear that “Coma” deserves a spot among the year’s highlights. We can’t help but pass along our strong recommendation—so give it a go, then spread the word to your friends.
Best Doom Metal Album Of 2024 – Men Guðs hond er sterk – Hamferð

It’s been an incredible year for artists hailing from the Faroe Islands, with several making their mark on our best-of lists. Hamferð may have kept everyone waiting for new material, but that patience has finally paid off. “Men Guðs Hond Er Sterk” rises above the pack as our pick for best doom metal release of 2024, revealing everything that makes this band stand out so strongly. While it does take some steps in a slightly new direction, the core remains anchored in what made them special in the first place, and the songwriting still is incredible.
This effort comes across as one of the most refined and well-produced albums we’ve encountered this year. Each track offers something that genuinely catches our attention, pulling us in through both familiar and unexpected approaches. Considering it’s only their third full-length, it’s impressive to witness how these musicians continue to refine their craft and deliver something that feels powerful. Frankly, this is one of the most amazing records we’ve heard this year, and it’s certain to hold a spot among 2024’s finest.

Now, after roughly four years, the band returns with “Echoes Of The Devil’s Den,” earning a spot on our best-of list for the year. This follow-up to “Holocene Extinction” covers a lot of ground, landing each blow with a solid hit.
For those who appreciate the heavier end of the spectrum, “Echoes Of The Devil’s Den” stays true to its roots. The record doesn’t need any flashy gimmicks, it thrives on the strength of its riffs, the intensity of its delivery, and the conviction behind its words. It takes what Terminal Nation built before and doubles down, leaving no doubt that this was worth the wait.

Eihwar’s new release steps into a territory that defies easy labels, coming across as “Viking war trance” collection. It is more than just a straightforward blend of Nordic folk and electronica. This album is a set of some previously known tracks, some of which have been revisited and subtly reshaped. This duo has carved out a signature approach that feels more immersive than a simple genre mash-up. One moment, there are these great electronic elements humming underneath, and then a rush of intensity bursts forth.
For quite a while, Eihwar carried an air of mystery around their work, keeping people guessing about what the next move might be. Each release suggested something distinctive, yet never quite gave away the entire plan. Now, with this collection, it’s clear that their earlier offerings were just the opening act. What they present here reaffirms that they’ve been quietly building toward something larger, feeding their audience pieces that felt unique but never quite predictable. This record feels like a feast—brimming with flavors. And we are happy to sit at that table in the Great Hall, and feast on this album.

Kati Rán’s solo album stands out as one of the most beautiful records we’ve heard this year. Filled with a wide range of amazing guests, it’s like a grand gathering of leading figures in the dark folk realm, their contributions mixing together into something that genuinely feels different. The heart of this release is rooted in heavy storytelling, pushing emotional tales as much as musical ones. It carries a certain quality that seems almost beyond everyday understanding, creating an atmosphere like space. There really wasn’t anything else quite like this in dark folk throughout 2024.
It might sound cliché, but this is the kind of music that doesn’t just fill a room—it can make you sense something almost tangible, as if the emotions at play have taken on a shape of their own. Best Experimental Album Of 2024 – Islet – Lindy-Fay Hella & Dei Farne

No other album in 2024 that hit us quite the way “Islet” did. Crafted by the duo Lindy-Fay Hella (Wardruna) & Dei Farne, this release took shape over the course of the pandemic, and that time seems to have fueled something truly special. It’s not easy to sum this one up in a few lines because it reaches out in several directions at once. One minute, you find yourself sinking into a moody, dark pop synth rhythm that feels almost trance-like, and the next, you are caught off guard by a surge of energy that makes me want to move. Then Lindy steps in with vocals that stop you in your tracks, adding a voice that can both soothe and mesmerize.
This album doesn’t fall neatly into any single category, and we appreciate that it doesn’t even try to. It’s more of a journey that can switch gears in a heartbeat, yet never loses its sense of what it is. From moment to moment, you are given something new, whether it’s an electronic pulse, a sudden burst of heaviness, or a quiet passage that lets you relax. We have had plenty of standout listens this year, but “Islet” secured a top spot by offering something we simply can’t find anywhere else.
Best Instrumental Album Of 2024 – The Grove – Ember Belladonna
Ember Belladonna delivers one absolutely beautiful piece of work with her latest release, “The Grove.” What makes this album stand out is her approach to folk metal. So many times, we hear bands trying to metal up folk, and not so much trying to folk up metal if that makes any sense. Many artists and bands attempt to walk this tightrope, but it’s rare to see the more folk elements really stand out on their own like they do with the flute in this record, and Ember delivers it perfectly.
“The Grove” was an absolute smorgasbord to our ears, filled with incredible melodies and rich arrangements. Ember has given us more flute than we could ever imagine, integrating it into the framework of the rest of the music without overshadowing the powerful instrumentals, while still taking center stage. No question that an amazing job was done here merging different styles, producing a wonderful sound and introducing something that really did feel different.

Across its thirteen tracks, this album gets into old Norse culture and various myths, shaping each piece into something that feels naturally spirited. The sound they’ve developed here balances atmospheric textures with a certain neo-folk touch, all while keeping a strong sense of vigor at its core.
Every moment hits with an energy that never wanes, and the result is a set of songs that flows together without losing the identity of each individual track. The instrumental work is consistently great. It’s as if each idea found its own proper home, merging into a broader vision. By blending tradition with a willingness to experiment, Hindarfjäll created an album that we found ourselves returning to time and again this year.

Best Progressive Album Of 2024 – Two: Wings Of Ember – Tvinna

“Two: Wings Of Ember” from Tvinna lands as one of those rare records that checks every box and then some. Each element feels right on target—arrangements that greats, killer guitar work, vocals that carry genuine feeling, and some of the best songwriting we’ve heard. It’s not often something scores a perfect 10, but this release justifies our decision to award it our highest possible ranking.
Part of the magic here comes from the variety of styles mixed together. There’s some progressive metal in the mix, touches of rock, and even those darker folk undertones, all combined with care so it flows naturally, instead of feeling patched together. That approach makes it clear that Tvinna isn’t interested in sticking to a single lane, but also it’s not like the band are just throwing random styles at the wall to see what works. It’s a blend that shows confidence and understanding what makes great music.
What “Two: Wings Of Ember” really proves is that this group has hit a stride worth paying attention to. They’ve taken what was promising before and cranked it up, shaping it into something that stands tall among the year’s best.

It really got to us, connecting more deeply than just about any other album we listened to.
Naturally, since this is the Sinners we’re talking about, there’s no shortage of that lively, in-your-face folk punk energy that’s become their signature.
