As the days grow shorter and the cold winds howl, December is here and it ushers in the time for our roundup of the best in metal and dark folk for 2023. This year has been exceptional, particularly in genres like symphonic and power metal, and notably in debut releases.

In 2023, we’ve broadened our scope, introducing new genres and, for the first time, a category for best music video. This expansion is just the beginning; we plan to include even more categories and more next year. But, reflecting on the past year, we’ve witnessed a slew of amazing releases, some possibly marking the final echoes of the pandemic era.

Several record labels had standout years. Atomic Fire Records impressed us with a slew of enjoyable releases. Napalm Records, in particular, had a monumental year. Their dominance over our list is reminiscent of the ‘Great Century Media’ takeover a few years backs.

Not only did they release a high volume of content; their releases were consistently strong. Delain delivered an outstanding album, Gloryhammer arguably released their best work yet, and Lords of the Lost brought some genuinely entertaining music to the table.

Deciding our favorites this year was a challenging task for the staff, given the sheer quality and variety of releases. But, the list below will reveal which albums and artists who truly stood out to us in 2023.

Album Of The Year – We Shall Remain – Eleine

Eleine, with their latest offering “We Shall Remain,” has ascended to the top of our list as the Album of the Year, a position that seems almost inevitable given their consistent presence in our previous selections. Each new project from Eleine has seen them grow in our esteem, and this year, amidst a challenging competition for the best symphonic album, “We Shall Remain” emerged as an unparalleled favorite record of the year, period.

This album marks a venture into darker and more dare we say, catchy realms, a feat not easily achieved in dark symphonic music. Eleine manages to blend the shadowy with the catchy, creating an album that’s as haunting as it is a real headbanger. At the heart of Eleine’s success is their authenticity and strong connection with their fans. The band writes music that’s true to themselves, which resonates deeply with their audience. This genuine approach to music-making is easily felt throughout the album. The duality in their music, with Rikard’s energizing presence there to make you headband, and the complementing Madeleine’s soothing vocals there to calm you down, continues to be a winning formula for the band.
